Thrifting Tuesday: Enka part III

Remember my first post about the ENKA factory? Me and my mom went there again! During easter there was a flea market. My mom went on Saturday and found these: A saddle brooch, tooth paste brooch (definitely from the sixties, the lady who sold it told it she got it from her aunt a long long time ago), lavender brooch and a brown head brooch. I also found a vintage south africa map entirely made out of animals. How cool is that? I am devoloping an obession for vintage school pictures and large vintage maps. Ah […]

Vintage Souvenir Brooches

These souvenir broches are so lovely! The typical souvenir pins are plastic brooches with a small dangling object attached to the brooch. Most of the time the dangle is a bottle of wine or a glass. But check out these bizarre deer pins:

Thrifting Tuesday: Vintage Market

Last weekend me and my sister went to visit a small market. In my neighborhood, only a five minute walk! The great thing about it was that it was a vintage market! I was a bit afraid everything would be super expensive (since it is already marked as ‘great vintage items’ instead of the usual clutter you normally have to dig through yourself) but it was not. We had a super day! My sister found two dresses as well. I took the risk by not-trying-them-on but my sweet sis hopped into a (heated!) van and tried […]

Madeleine Albright and her pins

Who doesn’t love Madeleine Albright? Besides being a politician and diplomat she became one of the most famous brooch-ladies of our time. Madeleine but didn’t realize how attentive the American public was ‘reading her pins’ until after she was out of office. Then there followed an exhibition displaying all of her pins. That is one exhibition I would really. like. to. see. A Dutch designer also made a brooch for Madeleine. Gijs Bakker created a Lady Liberty pin with two small clocks for the eyes in opposing directions, enabling Madeleine to glance down at one clock and her […]

Thrifting Tuesday: Parents on the roll

My parents love to go to auctions. My aunt (she has a online jewelry shop, very fancy!) goes as well and sometimes I do as well. Look what they won this auction! I am not sure if I like this peacock clock. It sure is colorful… These image albums are known in the Netherlands. They are called ‘Verkade plaatjes’. You received the images when buying products from the Verkade-brand. This flower album is seen a lot. But this sea album is a bit more rare! Look at all the fish :) It isn’t from Verkade but […]

Monday Brooch: The Fuller brooch

Sometimes you come across some fabulous brooches that just look a-ma-zing. That you wish you could own. This brooch is called the Fuller brooch, after captain Fuller who bought the brooch for the value of its silver. It’s a part of the British Museum collection. The centre part is decorated with five figures who represent the five human senses. In the centre is Sight, with large staring oval eyes. Sight was thought of as the most important of the senses in medieval times. The other four senses surround Sight, and can be identified by their actions. […]

Lovelies: Letterbak a.k.a. Type Case Drawer

When we had the Etsy Winter Picknick at Maaike‘s place I spotted this lovely Type Case Drawer. I had seen them before, but still found them a bit dull. But not Maaike’s! She had placed brooches in them, little treasures and goodies. I was in love. Do check out the insect in the right bottom corner. She makes those as brooches. They are hand made! So my hunt was for a type case drawer. I didn’t want a huge one, because I also wanted to take the drawer to markets. When I sell brooches, they would […]

Thrifting Tuesday: Bow Brooches

Last week my sister and I went thrifting. She scored some fabulous clothing and I found five brooches! I absolutely love the combination of cream enamel and gold/silver so I probably going to keep the swan pin. It was a coincidence that I found two bows. I photographed some bow brooches for Eliane this week. This photo below she uploaded to instagram. It matches perfect with her scarf. She probably crocheted the scarf herself. She makes amazing things. Do check out her shop called ROEST! Have you been thrifting this week? Did you find some gems? […]

Queen Elizabeth’s Flower Basket Brooch

Yesterday Queen Elizabeth received the High Commissioner of the Bahamas at Buckingham Palace. She wore the flower basket brooch! This brooch represents a basket filled with with ruby, diamond and sapphire flowers. She got it as a gift from her parents to mark the birth of Prince Charles in November 1948. Yesterday the queen wore a light pink dress. The flower basket brooch was not to be missed! scource

As Seen On Screen: Moonrise Kingdom Brooch

Yesterday I watched Moonrise Kingdom. A story about a scout and a girl who are in love and flea into the woods. Very funny and cute movie. I would definitely recommend you to see it. But the best part: The boy, Sam, wore a brooch! Along with his badges he wears an ornate costume-jewelry brooch — it’s short a few scratchy pearls. It belongs to his mother who passed away. He explains: “It’s not actually meant for a male to wear but I don’t give a damn” Overall the vibe of the movie is very sixties. The […]
